The great thing about panto is that it includes songs that go back years. Music stays in the memory. People can join in, sing along and reminisce. This performance is carefully tailored for people with dementia and their families or carers so that everyone can enjoy the wonder of theatre at Nottingham Playhouse in an environment that is comfortable and supportive.
Eleanor and Andrew from Nottingham Alzheimer’s Society came to see Aladdin to tell us what they think and how we can make our performance ‘Dementia Friendly’.
“The songs chosen are appropriate and the music will give something for people to latch onto. People can relate to things more in the past, it’s like clicking on a switch to bring it out. There are things in the show that people will have memories of and will be able to sing along with. People with dementia can join in without having to think about it.”
Andrew, Alzheimer’s Society
“I think people will really enjoy this. It makes people feel as though they haven’t been forgotten. They will feel included and its uplifting.”
Eleanor, Alzheimer’s Society
What makes this performance Dementia Friendly:
• The volume will be reduced and the house lights will be slightly on.
• Changing seats during the performance is fine and so is leaving the performance and re-entering.
• This is not a schools performance, so the audience will be quieter.
• There will be addition signage with pictures in the foyers.
• There will be a quiet room, before after and during the show.
• There will be more staff on hand to support.
• A very relaxed attitude to moving around the theatre and making noise.

Aladdin has everything you could wish for from one of the best festive traditions: spectacular sets, dazzling song and dance numbers, eye-popping costumes and familiar friends.
Join us for a magic carpet ride full of adventure and follow our hero as he attempts to win the heart of the beautiful princess Jasmine. Just watch out for the evil magician Abanazar, who will stop at nothing to get his hands on the all-powerful magic lamp.
The Playhouse Panto is the perfect show to get into the Christmas spirit with and the place to create everlasting memories with family and friends. Bring your best singing voice, loudest boos and heartiest cheers and help make sure Aladdin marries his true love and stops Abanazar before it is too late.
