The Theatre Royal & Royal Concert Hall and Nottingham Playhouse have joined forces to expand our offer for the over 55s. During the Summer Term we have courses in Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Song Writing and more, all in a relaxed and social setting.

All courses run during term time and there are no sessions at either venue on week commencing 29 May.

Readers’ Group

A chance to explore some of the greatest plays ever written, in a friendly and sociable group. We’ll be looking at key scenes, delving into the lives of the characters and how the writer creates the setting and the plot.

Creative Writing

Course Facilitator: Cathy Grindrod, an award-winning Derbyshire writer of poetry, plays and memoir, and an experienced facilitator, specialising in writing for well being.

Each session we will be using a piece of published writing as a stimulus for our own writing in class, and sharing work we create outside the sessions. There will also be opportunity to practise giving and receiving constructive feedback on copies of our work.

Mixed Media Art

Mixed Media Art is all about freedom, creative expression and experimentation. Developing your knowledge of a variety of inking, stamping, stencilling, collaging and doodling techniques, artist, Sarah Manton will help you to create a truly unique handmade art journal, filled with texture and images, connecting your inner soul with the outer world.

In these sessions you will be participating in inspiring writing exercises, discussion of writing by established authors and will have an opportunity to share work in a supportive group environment. Writers of all genres and levels of experience are welcome to come along and develop new material. For the last half of the term, the group will be working towards a public sharing of their writing at a Live at Lunch event on 7 July in the Theatre Royal Foyer.

Our movement class combines gentle ballet and contemporary technique and will improve your strength, balance and fitness in a social and friendly environment. Sessions are led by professional dance artiste Caroline Burn.

Drama*

Enjoy working with others to develop confidence and build skills in a fun and supportive theatrical environment. Learn acting and directing techniques through exploring classic and contemporary texts and create original pieces of theatre through a variety of devising processes and styles. As a part of the course, we will be focusing on the contemporary approach to staging the upcoming production of Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time.

Song Writing & Performance*

The course will explore lyric writing, how to create melodies and harmony, how to put it all together and walk away with finished and recorded songs. This will all happen within a supportive creative environment. No prior musical training is necessary but if you play an instrument (at any level) then why not bring it along!

Bursaries

If you would love to be involved in 55+ but feel that you cannot meet the course fee, we have a small number of bursaries available for each group, where either all or some of the costs are met by the Playhouse. Please note this applies to courses taking place at the Nottingham Playhouse ONLY.
