We’re delighted to announce that the environmental upgrade of Nottingham Playhouse has been highly commended by the RICS East Midlands Awards in the Design through Innovation category. The RICS Awards showcase the most inspirational regional initiatives and developments in land, property, construction and the built environment.
In 2014 we started a £1million programme of environmental improvement work with Gleeds to improve the thermal efficiency of the theatre and enhance the visitor experience. The aim of gaining efficiency savings was to enable us to spend more money on our in-house productions and invest further into the audience and visitor experience.
Now after a year of hard work we have successfully reached the end of an ‘invisible transformation’ to make the building more environmentally friendly. We are thrilled to report that the impact of the project is already being felt. Indicative readings from December show that energy usage has already been cut by 30%, and this is before the system is fully calibrated and 100% operational.
The extensive re-design work by Gleeds has made this possible and includes a new entrance canopy, newly double glazed windows, roof and wall insulation and the addition of 62 solar panels. The replacement of 50 year old light fittings is also estimated to save nearly £10, 000 a year on electricity bills.
However it was the innovative façade design, particularly in the use of Spacetherm® blanket, and the lack of disruption to theatre operations that led to recognition by the RICS awards. The insulation of Spacetherm® has provided a 34.30% reduction in heating load across the building and a saving of £8,020!
Nottingham Playhouse was also shortlisted in the Tourism and Leisure category of the awards. The certificate we received for Design through Innovation will now be proudly displayed front of house for all to see.
