How to Build a Tree - part 2

Thursday 3rd January 2013

Recently we took a look at the initial stages taken to build the tree which will be used on the set of our upcoming play, Alan Ayckbourn’s Joking Apart. Since then, the tree has been brought to life by our Props team, who have been busy adding to the frame so that it resembles a real tree.

The team’s first task was to bulk up the metal frame using a spray-on foam which gave the tree trunk its shape. Photographs of trees in Wollaton Park were taken by Head of Props, Nathan Rose, to refer to when making the tree itself. The photos were also hijacked by an over-friendly squirrel as you’ll see in our gallery!

The next stage was to carve into the foam and build up various textures to make the bark look as lifelike as possible. Finally leaves were added on to the branches, which really add to the realistic look. All that’s left to do now is to fit it all together and paint in a moss effect. We can’t wait to see the tree in all its glory on stage when Joking Apart opens on 26 January.
