Today, we have relaunched our SHINE appeal to raise money to create and sustain free community youth theatres for children across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
Our eight community youth theatres run in Bulwell, Mansfield, Sherwood, Chilwell, Bramcote, Gedling Netherfield and Gedling Newstead and at the hospital school at the Queens Medical Centre. Over 120 children, who otherwise would not be able to afford to, now have the opportunity to work together to create theatre, grow in confidence, learn life-enhancing skills and discover their unique voices to tell their own stories.
This year, we have also started to offer SHINE members the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification, Arts Award, so they can be inspired to connect with the arts and leave school feeling confident, ready to embrace new challenges and become the next generation of arts leaders.
“Starting this group gave me a new opportunity to make friends, to have a social life which I previously didn’t have…Shine bought out the confidence I didn’t have, without it I wouldn’t be who I am now.” Louisa, Bulwell Youth Theatre Member, 16.
Each youth theatre costs £6,000 a year to run and every year we try to raise £54,000 so that young people, often with little or no experience of the performing arts, from all across the city and county can enjoy an enriched and creative life. Over the Christmas season, we’re aiming to raise £15,000. We can only do this with your help.
