Nottingham Playhouse trip to see the crime thriller Arthur & George

Birmingham Repertory Theatre

Our next production at Nottingham Playhouse is David Edgar’s adaptation of Julian Barnes’ best-selling novel Arthur & George, in association with Birmingham Repertory Theatre. The play opened first at Birmingham REP so we took our opportunity to see the show before it transfers to Nottingham Playhouse on Thursday 22 April.

Arthur & George is based on Julian Barnes’ semi-fictional novel which vividly brings to life the fascinating friendship that arose between Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the man behind Sherlock Holmes and George Edalji, a solicitor living in Birmingham. Living worlds apart in Victorian England, the pair are drawn together when George, desperate to prove his innocence of a terrible crime for which he was imprisoned, contacts the world famous crime writer to help win him a pardon.

Pre-show lead up

Seizing our opportunity to see the show in advance, a group from the Marketing and Box Office departments braved the pre-bank holiday traffic chaos and travelled down to Birmingham. Despite concerns, we made it in plenty of time to have an amble around our fellow Midlands theatre, take a few pictures (see above) and collect our tickets and programmes from the friendly Box Office team before taking our seats and joining the busy matinee crowd.

We’d seen the set model at a design meeting a few months ago and were delighted to see it realised on stage. It’s an atmospheric design which grabs your interest and gives you chills right from the start.

Our Verdict

The show was a superbly acted mystery – thrilling, engrossing and funny. It had us on the edge of our seats dying to know what would happen next and the whodunnit element is as gripping as any Sherlock Holmes mystery. As well as being entertaining, the play also makes you think about guilt and innocence and the importance of identity which gave us plenty to talk about on the journey home. A good job really, as the bank holiday rush finally caught up to us!
