The Nottingham Playhouse family were saddened to hear of the recent loss of wonderful actor and performer Alex Giannini. Giannini died suddenly while in between performances for the production of Mack and Mabel at the Theatre Royal Plymouth, in which he was performing the role of Mr Baumann.
Alex Giannini was a firm favourite with Nottingham Playhouse audiences, where he appeared in Feelgood, On the Waterfront, and as Dean Martin in Rat Pack Confidential. He also flew the Playhouse flag in the West End (twice) and in Hong Kong.
In his review of Rat Pack Confidential, Guardian theatre critic Michael Billington said: “Alex Giannini brilliantly conveys Martin’s comic cool, even down to his habit of rocking sideways while he sang as if half seas over. His rendering of Memories Are Made of This, in particular, is a model of stylish re-creation.”
Nottingham Playhouse’s Artistic Director Giles Croft has fond memories of working with Giannini: Alex was a delight to work with, a remarkably talented actor and singer and a very nice man. I spent many happy hours with him in rehearsal rooms, restaurants and bars and I’m sad that that won’t be happening again. Whatever the Italian is for a Mensch, that was Alex.”
Nottingham Playhouse extends its sympathies to Alex Giannini’s family and friends – he will be sorely missed.
