Fifth Word was formed in 2008 and is run by Joint Artistic Directors Laura Ford and Angharad Jones. As a company, they produce and tour ambitious new plays from the most exciting voices around the UK. Their work shines a light on unheard stories, bringing fresh, engaging work to theatres and younger audiences . Fifth Word present plays that entertain, emotionally engage and spark debate relevant to our time. Located in the East Midlands, they nurture regional voices and the next generation of talent.
In Autumn 2015, Fifth Word staged All The Little Lights, in their first production as Associate Artists at Nottingham Playhouse. They also presented the first Fifth Word Award for Most Promising Playwright in partnership with Nottingham Playhouse. After 102 entries were received from across the East Midlands, Leicester-based Toby Campion was announced as the winner, for his first play, Wreck. The award includes a 12 month attachment with Fifth Word where Toby will receive £2000 and a mentor to work with him over the year to create a new play.
Wreck was staged at Nottingham Playhouse to critical acclaim in September 2017. All the Little Lights transferred to the Arcola Theatre for a sell-out run in October and November in 2017.
In Spring 2018, Fifth Word and Nottingham Playhouse will co-produce the world premiere of James Fritz’s Lava. Further details will be announced in the new year.
