Welcome to Rocksburg
An original South African ‘action play’

Following on from the huge success of Township Stories ‘one of the most remarkable pieces of theatre to emerge from post-apartheid South Africa’ (Lyn Gardner, The Guardian), Grootboom, dubbed as ‘the township Tarantino’ returns once again with Welcome to Rocksburg.

Based on a cult Township comic book Welcome to Rocksburg is a series of original and compelling South African ‘action plays’.

The story revolves around a facially disfigured young man, derisively called ‘King Kong’, who has the body and the strength of Hercules. When he falls in love for the first time, with the girlfriend of a notorious township thug, it forces him into a life he’d been determined to avoid – the life of crime. He soon finds himself caught up in a cat and mouse game between the criminal underworld and a corrupt police force.

Welcome to Rocksburg uses the best stylistic devices of Township and Community theatre including slow motion, and the traditions of the Hollywood action film, to present this powerful Beauty & the Beast love story.

Workshop: An Introduction to Township Theatre Styles

‘Welcome to Rocksburg’ is a post-apartheid South African production by Paul Grootboom which tells the gritty, but beautiful story of love in unusual and dangerous circumstances.

Nottingham Playhouse has the pleasure of being able to offer a theatre workshop on behalf of the Afrovibes Festival. This workshop will be ‘an introduction to ‘Township’ theatre styles, based on minimal resources and community issues of love, adultery, alcoholism and crime.

You will be working alongside members of the production’s theatre company to dissect a scene from the play.

This will take place at Nottingham Playhouse from 2pm to 3pm on Saturday 23 October. This workshop is free and open to people who are 16 years old and over. Places are limited, so please call Box Office on 0115 941 9419 to book your place.
