A GANGSTER SPECTACLE
1930s Chicago. Small time crime boss Arturo and his men offer protection. Protection for workers, jobs, businesses. As the Great Depression hits the City’s fortunes, Arturo strikes a deal and makes a killing until soon his shadow looms from the markets to the docks. But whether you’re with him or against him, you can’t ignore the resistible rise of Arturo Ui.
Written by Stephen Sharkey, this potent translation of Brecht’s shocking 1941 satire contains pitch black humour in a striking new production directed by the Young Vic’s Associate Director, Walter Meierjohann.

Unquestionably, The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui is as close to theatrical perfection as anybody has a right to expect.
…the entire cast are at the very top of their game and so make the whole play zip along at lightening speed.
…in truth it is the play and it is the message that are most captivating and most disturbing, making this one of the finest productions to have been played out on this stage for a very long time.
— The Stage
Meierjohann has created a muscular, masculine production…where vaudeville meets Shakespeare meets nourish thriller.
Bartholomew’s transformation from gauche, scowling outsider to eloquent, murderous megalomaniac is mesmerizing.
8/10. Powerful storytelling
— Liverpool Echo
This production is stylish, slick and moves from scene to scene effortlessly. Full of humour, dark though it is, the writing is so good that you can’t help but laugh.
9/10. A first class, solid piece, this is one show that must not be missed.
