As one fairy tale ends, another begins.
Philip Pullman’s glorious and gripping story is brought to life on stage for the first time in the UK. Combining humour, fantasy, and adventure this moving and darkly comic tale slowly reveals its connection to one of the most famous fairy tales of all time.
“I Was A Rat!” insists a scruffy page boy who turns up one evening on the doorstep of old married couple Bob and Joan. But what is he now? A terrifying monster rampaging in the sewers? A money-spinning fairground freak? Or just an ordinary boy, though a little ratty in his habits?
Full of music, fantastic physical performances and unforgettable images I Was A Rat! will surprise, delight and move audiences of all ages.
Leading the cast as Roger is young actor Fox Jackson-Keen. Fox made his debut on the professional stage in 2008 at the tender age of 13 in the lead role of Billy in Billy Elliot the Musical.
Adapted and directed by Teresa Ludovico, Artistic Director of Teatro Kismet in Bari, Southern Italy, best known for their thrilling visual and physical productions.

This is a highly artful, child-friendly pastiche which takes a famous fairy tale as its starting point, pokes fun at adult pretensions and gullibility on the way, and rattles along to a deeply satisfying conclusion

Just been to see "I Was A Rat" at Nottingham Playhouse. You know when you get a play that you just can't take your eyes of the stage, well this is one of them. A lot darker than I had expected with imagery reminiscent of "Clockwork Orange", "Monty Python", "Yellow Submarine" and a Pet Shop Boys concert all mixed into one. This children's fantasy/fairy tale may sometimes go over the heads of the kids but makes a delicious recipe for adults who enjoy Grimm tales. Interesting lighting and spot on sound effects combined with the gymnastic flips and wriggles from ex child gymnast and "Billy Elliot" actor Fox Jackson-Keen make this Dahl-ish children's fairy tale something special for all ages. On until Saturday 13 April.
