WHEN PEOPLE ARE BEING KIDNAPPED AND KILLED, YOU HAVE TO TAKE ACTION…”

In 2011 going to the theatre is a crime. People travel far from their homes, directed by text message to a secret spot in the countryside for a glimpse of a performance. Audiences are arrested – supporters are kidnapped, imprisoned and killed. This isn’t fiction. This is Belarus.

Established in 2005 in response to repression in “Europe’s last dictatorship,” the award-winning Belarusian company—now outlawed at home—stages a gripping original drama based on the true story of dissident Irina Krasovskaya and her husband Anatoly, who was “disappeared” 10 years ago.

Discover Love focuses on the reflections of a woman whose husband has been kidnapped and murdered, and intermingles Irina’s story with other women whose family members have been kidnapped, murdered or remain in jails to this day.

The Belarus Free Theatre is one of the most acclaimed political companies in the world. They received the French Republic Human Rights Prize for this production and for their long record of creating brave, bold and important theatre in exceptionally difficult circumstances.

WARNING: Contains material which some people may find offensive.

Please note: performed in Russian with English surtitles

Please note that there is a £1.50 online booking fee – this has been added to the ticket price. Online ticket purchasers for this production will be seated in the best available seats at the time of booking.

The Belarus Free Theatre were originally scheduled to perform at Lakeside Arts Centre as part of the first Nottingham European Arts and Theatre Festival but had to cancel when their visas were revoked, essentially making them stateless. Now, after a lengthy battle, we are delighted to welcome them to Nottingham Playhouse as a late addition to neat11.
