CRIME AND PASSION DRAMATISED IN DANCE (20/04/2007)

Nottingham Playhouse’s Strictly Dance Season 2007 continues this May with two contrasting performances linked only by their virtuosity and passion. JASMIN VARDIMON COMPANY returns to the Playhouse on Tuesday 15 May with its new show JUSTITIA, a groundbreaking courtroom drama told through dance. Then Sunday 27 May sees the return of the flamboyant troupe JALEO, beating out flamenco’s timeless tale of passion and seduction to an irresistible rhythm. Tickets for both shows are available from the Box Office on 0115 941 9419 or online at www.nottinghamplayhouse.co.uk.

JASMIN VARDIMON COMPANY, which last appeared at Nottingham Playhouse in October 2005 with Park, enters the courtroom with her new crime drama JUSTITIA. Named after the Roman goddess of justice, JUSTITIA invites the audience on an investigative journey to unravel the multiple truths behind a gripping crime story. The action is theatrically staged on a revolving set, allowing the audience to witness it from different perspectives: at the crime scene, in the court house, inside an intimate group therapy room. A series of secrets unfold, adding up to a multi-faceted examination of the justice system punctuated by stabs of dark humour. Working to a script by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, an international cast of eight, including Jasmin Vardimon herself, create sharply delineated characters through the innovative choreography.

Newly appointed Associate Artist of Sadler’s Wells, which co-produces JUSTITIA, award-winning choreographer JASMIN VARDIMON has built an outstanding reputation since founding Jasmin Vardimon Company ten years ago. She is renowned for her uniquely theatrical choreographic voice, combining dance with physical theatre and quirky characterisation. Vardimon’s previous career as a psychological ‘interviewer’ is a driving force in her creative work, which is marked by an acute observation of human behaviour. Vardimon’s instantly recognisable style, featuring beautifully detailed movement, edgy comedy and engaging drama, is on full display in Justitia.

The acclaimed JALEO, who last performed at Nottingham Playhouse in 2002, are back in Britain with a compelling new insight into the magical flamenco world of Andalusian dance, song and guitar. From its semi-clandestine origins in the early 19th century as the native music of a minority in the south-west corner of Spain, flamenco has grown into a highly respected and internationally accepted art form, which in the new millennium has a rapidly growing number of students worldwide.

Fusing the essential elements of flamenco with their own inimitable brand of Spanish passion and emotion, JALEO unleash the raw energy and sensuous rhythms inherent within flamenco. Their new show is a potent cocktail of explosive footwork, haunting singing, virtuoso guitar playing and percussive handclapping, featuring some of flamenco’s finest artists.
