MUM’S THE WORD AT NOTTINGHAM PLAYHOUSE (13/03/2007)

Mum’s the word on everyone’s lips this coming Sunday (18 March)  and Nottingham Playhouse has chosen to mark Mother’s Day with a unique offer. In the scandalous comedy drama MRS WARREN’S PROFESSION, an outraged daughter finds out that her mother has been keeping Mum on a grand scale. Now the Playhouse is offering daughters and sons everywhere the opportunity to keep Mum happy with a free night’s entertainment. Callers can have a ticket for their mothers free of charge for any performance next week: Tuesday 20  Saturday 24 March at 7.45pm, or the Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. All they need do is ask for a ticket for ’Mum’ when buying their own seat for the same performance via the Box Office (0115 941 9419)*.

In MRS WARREN’S PROFESSION, strait-laced young Vivie Warren is flabbergasted to discover how her mother made the family fortune: prostitution!  When she learns that Mrs Warren now runs houses of ill repute all over the Continent, the stage is set for the mother of all confrontations.

Written by George Bernard Shaw back in 1893, MRS WARRENS PROFESSION was so contentious that it waited over thirty years to be performed in public. Boasting two of the strongest female characters ever created for the stage, it tackles themes that remain challenging to this day, but with the lightest of touches. Full of wit and emotion, this is a play to which any mother or daughter can relate.

A co-production by Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company with the Royal Lyceum Theatre, MRS WARRENS PROFESSION arrives in Nottingham already garlanded with critical acclaim after a hugely successful run in Edinburgh. Celebrated stage and screen actress Paola Dionisotti plays Mrs Warren, with Coronation Street’s Emma Stansfield as her daughter Vivie. The play is directed by Tony Cownie, with designer Neil Murray contributing the fine stage settings and sumptuous period costumes. The full dates at Nottingham Playhouse are Wednesday 14  Saturday 31 March.
