Young Critics' Circle

The Young Critics’ Circle Scheme is an exciting initiative introduced to Nottingham Playhouse in 2001. The scheme is free of charge for pupils in full time education.

Critics’ Circle is designed to attract young people to the theatre independently and to stimulate a response to the work they see. Their responses can form part of their record of achievement, and secondary schools from across the region are encouraged to take part. Each school recruits two young critics, who sign up to a series of performances.

Since its launch in 2001 the scheme has gone from strength to strength, with over 35 schools taking part. Each Critics’ Circle event begins with a 60-minute workshop, followed by the performance of a Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company production. The event includes an interval drink with members of the Press.

The students’ responses to the production might be a formal review, a painting, poem, a rap – the aim is to stimulate a response from the young critic, regardless of their educational ability.

There are two Critics’ Circle groups. Members of the Year 10 and 11 group commit to coming to a season of press nights, from September to February or February to June. The Year 12 and 13 Silver group commit to attending 10 sessions throughout the year, and complete their Silver Arts Award alongside the sessions.

See News & Reviews sections for examples of work by Critics’ Circle participants.
