About

Thanks to a Heritage Lottery grant of over £1.2million and the enterprise and vision of the public/private partnership behind the project, Nottingham Playhouse has been given a huge face-lift, in particular a new delicatessen, restaurant and café bar called CAST.*

2003 marked the 40th anniversary of Nottingham Playhouse which was built on its current site in 1963 and designed by award winning architect Peter Moro. Moro was also responsible for the Royal Festival Hall in London, the first modernist building in the UK.

The Playhouse is one of just a few twentieth century buildings to have listed status and the architects, Nottingham based GCMS, have tread very carefully. John Macaulay, the designer responsible for the new look CAST, said "we had to tread carefully to ensure that the transformation was totally in keeping with Peter Moro’s original concept but also had to ensure that we appealed to today’s tastes. Using space, lighting and textures, we’ve managed to achieve exactly that."

CAST offers a top quality delicatessen, a spacious 50 seat brasserie serving modern British style cuisine, a lounge bar in which you can enjoy a selection of World Tapas and is the first venue of its kind to display a regular video arts commission in the city, similar to the Wapping Project in London.

The paved area outside the Playhouse benefits from outdoor seating ideal in warmer weather for drinkers and diners relax after a hard day at the office. And for a moment of reflection, there’s always the magnificent Sky Mirror designed by Anish Kapoor.

The emphasis throughout CAST is on creativity and quality, whether that be reflected in the menu, the deli or the design. Creative Director of CAST Ashley Walter said, "this is the most exciting and innovative project to hit the Midlands".

As with Nottingham Playhouse, CAST is family friendly and wheelchair accessible. Nottingham Playhouse Chief Executive Stephanie Sirr added,

"Everybody has worked tremendously hard at Nottingham Playhouse and for CAST getting the detail just right. We will finally have a catering experience to equal the high quality of our theatre productions. We look forward to welcoming everyone".

*CAST is the result of collaboration between public and private sectors. The partners involved include, The Nottingham Playhouse, Heritage Lottery Fund, Nottingham City Council, Sir Harry Djanogly, the supporters of Nottingham Playhouse, Arts and Business (East Midlands), GCMS Architects, Casciani Evans Wood, Paul Smith, Ashley Walter (local entrepreneur) and Moro Restaurants Ltd.
